The Roxy Music frontman was married to Lucy Birley for over 20 years.
The former model and socialite has died on holiday at the age of 58.
Birley - previously known as Lucy Helmore and then Lucy Ferry - married Bryan in 1982 when she was aged 22. They divorced in 2003.
She was also the mother of four children with Bryan: Otis, Isaac, Tara and Merlin.
She was surrounded by her dogs when she died in Ireland, a statement from the family confirmed.
Her second husband Robin Birley said: "On Monday Lucy Birley passed away whilst on holiday in Ireland, surrounded by her beloved dogs, Daisy, Peg and Daphne.
"Her husband Robin, and her sons - Otis, Isaac, Tara and Merlin - are understandably devastated and request that their privacy be respected during this difficult time."
Bryan Ferry said: "I'm much saddened and shocked by this tragic news of Lucy’s death. The family request that our privacy be respected during this difficult time."

Lucy was also a keen photographer, and in 2006 she married nightclub owner Robin - the son of Annabel Goldsmith.
Ferry credited Lucy with saving him from a "distraught" period of his life, and that she helped him get off drugs.
Although her face is not seen, Lucy was the model on the front cover of Roxy Music's album Avalon.
