Kate Garraway has been left 'shaken but safe' after the accident on Sunday (July 27)
Smooth Radio presenter Kate Garraway was driving with her children Darcey and Billy when her car's tyre exploded on the motorway leaving her stranded in the middle of high-speed traffic.
She confirmed that the incident happened during the first time she had 'taken the kids out without Derek.'
Kate thanked her 'saviours' in an Instagram post showing the obliterated tyre and describing the accident.
She wrote: "Thanks to our amazing saviours Liz & Mark from @kentpoliceuk who rescued me after a full tyre blow out on the motorway!!! Never had one before – utterly terrifying.
"Managed to keep control of car but couldn’t get off motorway as no hard shoulder & when the AA said they couldn’t come for an hour, then rang after half an hour to say might still be an hour had no choice but to call the police.
"They were so brilliant and got us to safety and we are now on way home in taxi," she added. "Shaken but safe, tow truck on way to car."
‘It’s first time have taken kids out without Derek too, but we are safe and will update you fully on GMB with Ben Shephard tomorrow from 6 a.m,’ she finished.
Kate Garraway returned to presenting Good Morning Britain two weeks ago after her husband Derek started to show signs of improvement.
Good Morning Britain gives update on Kate Garraway's husband Derek
The incident comes just days after Kate shared a positive update about Derek, revealing that he is now “stable” after moving from a deep coma to a minimal state of consciousness.
Kate told Good Morning Britain viewers on July 21, how her 52-year-old husband, who has been in hospital since the end of March, opened his eyes for nurses and “looked focused”.
Kate said: “He is stable and actually yesterday, I spoke to the nurses and they said they had put Good Morning Britain on, and they felt that because his eyes were open, he looked focused."
Everyone at Smooth is thinking of Derek, Kate, Darcey and Billy, and continue to wish for Derek's recovery.
