Soccer Aid 2018: What is it in aid of?
Soccer Aid raises money and awareness for Unicef, the world’s leading organisation for children.
It started in 2006 as an idea from Unicef UK ambassador Robbie Williams and his friend Jonathan Wilkes. Now in its 12th year, the event has raised £24 million for Unicef’s work for children, and has previously involved legendary players Diego Maradona, Zinedine Zidane and Teddy Sheringham as well as huge Hollywood stars such as Edward Norton, Jeremy Renner and Gerard Butler.
The UK government will match every £1 donated by the public through its UK Aid Match scheme. Robbie said: “I am buzzing that Soccer Aid for Unicef is back.
"Reclaiming the title for England this year is going to taste so much sweeter with Usain leading the Soccer Aid World XI. He’s giving it all the big talk and showing off his lightning bolts right now, but come Sunday 10th June at Old Trafford, he’ll be left quaking in his big size thirteens!
"I can’t wait to lead out the England team in what really is a game like no other. With your support, we will help children in danger around the world.”
