Ricky Gervais is very passionate about music, and clearly has a lot of talent when it comes to writing songs and performing as his comedy characters.

He recorded a whole album's worth of material of his David Brent movie Life on the Road, and he even had a shortlived career as a popstar in the '80s with his band Seona Dancing.

However, he has revealed to Smooth Radio that he has absolutely no plans to release his own album of music, following on from the likes of Hugh Laurie or even Nick Knowles.

"Oh, God, no disrespect to Hugh Laurie, but no. No. Me as me? No, no, no. That doesn’t work for a comedian."

He added: "Again, no disrespect to Nick Knowles, but no. I was very clear that this was David Brent, and written for David Brent, and performed by him.

"Me doing… oh, God, it sends a shiver down my spine. No. no, I would not, thank you.

"Oh, listen, I still think it’s the greatest art form, and I’m jealous of musicians. So I get to use their great work on my art now. But no, I think I found my vocation. I don’t think it was being a serious pop star in retrospect!"

Ricky next stars in his new series After Life on Netflix. The comedy drama centres around his character Tony, who is struggling to cope after the untimely death of his wife, played by Kerry Godliman in videos she recorded for him.

After Life is available on Netflix from next Friday (March 8).
