2024 saw the passing of many high-profile and inspirational individuals from the entertainment industry.

Join us in remembering some of the famous faces we’ve lost over the past year.

  1. Derek Draper

    Kate Garraway’s husband Derek Draper died on January 3, 2024, after an almost four-year-long battle with long Covid.

    In a statement published on January 5, Kate remembered her “darling husband” Derek, saying: “Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed.

    "I have so much more to say, and of course I will do so in due course, but for now I just want to thank all the medical teams who fought so hard to save him and to make his final moments as comfortable and dignified as possible,” she continued.

    "Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have so generously given our family so much support. Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life."

  2. David Soul

    Starsky & Hutch actor David Soul died on January 4.

    Best known for his role as Detective Kenneth ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson in the 70s TV series, the 80-year-old also starred in films such as 1979’s Salem’s Lot and achieved success as a singer of hits including 1977’s ‘Don’t Give Up on Us’.

    The American-British actor’s death was announced by his wife Helen Snell, who shared: “David Soul - beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother - died yesterday after a valiant battle for life in the loving company of family.

    "He shared many extraordinary gifts in the world as actor, singer, storyteller, creative artist and dear friend. His smile, laughter and passion for life will be remembered by the many whose lives he has touched."

  3. Glynis Johns

    Mary Poppins star Glynis Johns also passed away on January 4, 2024, aged 100.

    The Tony Award-winning stage and screen actress was much loved for her over eight-decade-long career, starring in films and plays such as 1953’s The Sword and the Rose and Sondheim’s A Little Night Music.

    Announcing her death, Johns’ manager Mitch Clem said: “Glynis powered her way through life with intelligence, wit, and a love for performance, affecting millions of lives.

    “Today is a sombre day for Hollywood. Not only do we mourn the passing of our dear Glynis, but we mourn the end of the golden age of Hollywood."

  4. Harry Connick Sr.

    Singer and actor Harry Connick Jr.’s father Harry Connick Sr. died January 25, 2024.

    In an obituary shared by his son’s publicist, Harry Connick Sr. was remembered by his wife Londa and children Harry Jr. and Suzanna.

    Harry Connick Sr. was a US Navy veteran who served in World War II, and served as New Orleans’ district attorney from 1973 to 2003.

  5. Melinda Ledbetter

    Beach Boys star Brian Wilson’s wife of 29 years, Melinda Ledbetter, died on January 30.

    The 77-year-old first met Brian at a car dealership in 1986, but the couple were prevented from getting together at the time. Eventually, however, the pair reconnected and married in 1995.

    Remembering his wife, Brian wrote: “Melinda was more than my wife, she was my saviour. She gave me the emotional security I needed to have a career.

    “She encouraged me to make the music that was closest to my heart. She was my anchor. She was everything for us. Please say a prayer for her."

  6. Adele Springsteen

    Bruce Springsteen’s mom Adele Springsteen passed away on January 31, aged 98.

    Remembering his mother in a tribute video posted to his social media channels, Bruce shared the lyrics of his song ‘The Wish’.

    “I remember in the morning mom hearing your alarm clock ring. I’d lie in bed and listen to you getting ready for work, the sound of your makeup case on the sink...

    “It ain’t no phone call on Sunday, flowers or a Mother’s Day card. It ain’t no house on the hill with a garden and a nice little yard. I’ve got my hot rod down on Bond Street I’m older but you’ll know me in a glance. We’ll find us a little rock ‘n roll bar and we’ll go out and dance.”

  7. Ian Lavender

    Ian Lavender, best known for his role as Private Pike in Dad’s Army, died on February 2, 2024.

    The 77-year-old actor was 22 when he was cast in the beloved World War II-inspired sitcom which focuses on a platoon of the United Kingdom’s Home Guard.

    In his stage and screen career, Lavender also starred in episodes of sitcoms including Rising Damp and Yes Minister, and played Derek Harkinson in EastEnders.

  8. Toby Keith

    Country music star Toby Keith died on February 5, 2024, aged 62.

    The ‘How Do You Like Me Now?!’ singer’s death was announced via his official website and social media accounts, 18 months after Toby revealed he had been diagnosed with stomach cancer.

    “Toby Keith passed peacefully last night on February 5th, surrounded by his family. He fought his fight with grace and courage. Please respect the privacy of his family at this time," the statement read.

    Toby remains one of country’s most successful artists, having achieved 20 number one hits and sold over 40 million albums worldwide.

  9. Henry Fambrough

    The Spinners’ last surviving member Henry Fambrough died on February 7, aged 85.

    A member of the famous quintet (also known as the Detroit Spinners) since their formation in 1954, Henry was one of the group’s three lead singers.

    The R&B icon can be heard singing on many of the band’s mid-70s hits, including ‘If You Can’t Be in Love’, ‘Ghetto Child’ and ‘Just As Long As We Have Love’, on which he sang a duet with Dionne Warwick.

  10. Robin Windsor

    Strictly Come Dancing professional Robin Windsor passed away on February 19, 2024, aged 44.

    Robin’s dance company Burn The Floor posted on their social media that the popular dancer had “tragically passed away” in news which shocked friends and fans of the dancer.

    “His talent, attitude, energy and personality helped create the Burn The Floor stage reputation. He leaves a void in our hearts that will never be filled, yet our wonderful memories will stay forever,” their statement continued.

  11. John Savident

    Coronation Street icon John Savident died aged 86 on February 21, 2024.

    Best known for his role as booming businessman Fred Elliott in the ITV soap opera, John also had roles in films including Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange and acted on the stage in productions including Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera.

    John’s Corrie co-star Sue Nicholls remembered John in a sweet tribute, saying: “My memories of working with you dear John on the street are a joy, and always will be. God bless you and thank you for being in my life. Much love to you and your friends and family."

  12. Dave Myers

    Beloved Hairy Biker Dave Myers died on February 28, 2024, after a two-year health battle with cancer.

    The 66-year-old TV chef’s death was announced by his Hairy Bikers co-star and best friend Si King, who wrote that Myers had died “peacefully at home” surrounded by family and friends.

    “I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime,” his tribute continued.

    “I wish you god's speed brother; you are and will remain a beacon in this world. See you on the other side. Love ya.”

  13. Eric Carmen

    ‘All By Myself’ and ‘Hungry Eyes’ singer Eric Carmen passed away on March 11, 2024.

    The 74-year-old's death was announced by his wife Amy via the singer’s official website.

    “Our sweet, loving and talented Eric passed away in his sleep, over the weekend,” Amy penned about the ‘Make Me Lose Control’ star.

    “It brought him great joy to know, that for decades, his music touched so many and will be his lasting legacy.”

  14. Samantha Davis

    Actress and wife of Warwick Davis, Samantha Davis, died aged 53 on March 24, 2024.

    Samantha starred in projects including Willow and the final Harry Potter film. However, she was best known for her charity work and for being the co-founder (with Warwick) of the dwarfism charity Little People UK.

    Paying tribute to his wife of 30 years, Warwick said in a statement that Samantha was his “most trusted confidante and an ardent supporter of everything I did in my career.

    “Her passing has left a huge hole in our lives as a family. I miss her hugs," his statement continued.

  15. Mike Pinder

    The Moody Blues’ founding member Mike Pinder died on April 24, 2024, aged 82.

    The English rock band’s last surviving original member sang with the group until their ninth album Octave in 1978, and was known for his work with the Mellotron.

    After leaving the Moody Blues, Pinder later released several solo albums under his own record label One Step in the 90s.

    Pinder’s death was announced by later The Moody Blues member John Lodge, who shared that the ‘Nights In White Satin’ artist’s “final days were filled with music, encircled by the love of his family.”

  16. Susan Buckner

    Grease star Susan Buckner passed away on May 2, 2024.

    The Patty Simcox actress was a dancer, singer, synchronised swimmer, and beauty pageant winner, as well as the star of TV shows including When the Whistle Blows and Starsky & Hutch.

    Her death, aged 72, was confirmed by her daughter Samantha Mansfield, who shared in a tribute: “She was magic. She was my best friend. And I will miss her every day. I was lucky I had such a lighting rod of a mother and now I have her as an angel.”

  17. Bernard Hill

    Actor Bernard Hill died on May 5 aged 79 years old.

    Best known for his roles in films including Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy and James Cameron’s Titanic, Bernard also starred in the 1980s TV series Boys from the Blackstuff and more recently in the first series of ITV’s Unforgotten.

    Bernard’s agent Lou Coulson confirmed the news of his death in May. Tributes poured in for the actor from his many friends and co-stars, including from Boys from the Blackstuff writer Alan Bleasdale who shared: “I was desperate to work with him.

    "Everything he did - his whole procedure for working, the manner in which he worked and his performance was everything that you could ever wish for. You always felt that Bernard would live forever."

  18. Dabney Coleman

    Actor and “dear friend” of Dolly Parton, Dabney Coleman, passed away aged 92 on May 16, 2024.

    Among his many film and TV credits, Dabney portrayed Franklin M. Hart Jr. in the Dolly Parton film 9 to 5 alongside an all-star cast including Dolly, Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin.

    Other roles included parts in 1982’s Tootsie, and in the TV shows Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman and Yellowstone (his final role).

    Dolly paid tribute to Dabney on Instagram, sharing: “Dabney was a great actor and became a dear friend. He taught me so much when I was doing my first movie... We remained friends through the years and I will miss him greatly as many people will."

  19. Janis Paige

    Janis Paige, one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age, died on June 2, 2024.

    Aged 101, during her career in film, Janis starred in works including the 1948 film Romance of the High Seas and the 1949 Western The Younger Brothers.

    In the 50s, she starred as Babe Williams in the original production of The Pajama Game on Broadway and led her own sitcom It’s Always Jan.

    Janis went on to enjoy and incredibly varied TV career with roles in programmes including Columbo, The Betty White Show and Charlie’s Angels.

  20. William Russell

    Doctor Who and The Adventures of Sir Lancelot star William Russell died on June 3, 2024, aged 99.

    One of the Doctor's first companions, William was fondly remembered by current Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies as a “fine, nimble, witty, heartfelt actor who absolutely sold the truth of those early years.”

    In 2022, William’s return to Doctor Who to play his character Ian led him to set the Guinness World Record for the longest gap between an actor’s appearance as a character in a TV show (57 years).

  21. Dr Michael Mosley

    TV producer, presenter and writer Dr Michael Mosley tragically passed away, aged 67, on June 5, 2024.

    Dr Michael went missing while on a walk on the Greek island of Symi, where he was on holiday with his wife Clare.

    On June 9, his wife broke the news that Michael’s body had been found after a five-day search of the island.

    “We’re taking comfort in the fact that he so very nearly made it. He did an incredible climb, took the wrong route and collapsed where he couldn’t be easily seen by the extensive search team,” the family’s statement shared.

  22. Mark James

    American songwriter Mark James died aged 83 on June 8, 2024.

    The ‘Suspicious Minds’ writer was known for his work with Elvis Presley, Brenda Lee and B.J. Thomas, and for being the writer of Presley’s ‘Always on My Mind’ which later found fame greater fame as a cover by the Pet Shop Boys in 1987.

    In a statement, James's family said Mark’s “larger-than-life personality filled any room he was in, and his smile lit it up...

    "He was a captivating storyteller who had the sweetest smile, the most infectious laugh and a twinkle in his eye that never dimmed.”

  23. Donald Sutherland

    Hollywood legend Donald Sutherland died aged 88 on June 20, 2024.

    The Canadian actor’s death was announced by his actor son Kiefer Sutherland in a statement which read: “With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away.

    "I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived."

    Among his many roles on screen, Donald starred in M*A*S*H, Animal House, and more recently The Hunger Games film series.

  24. Joe Bonsall

    The Oak Ridge Boys singer Joe Bonsall passed away on July 9, aged 76.

    Joe’s death followed the singer’s announcement that he would be retiring from touring as a result of health issues (posthumously revealed to be amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) in January 2024.

    The ‘Elvira’ and ‘Bobbie Sue’ singer’s death was announced on the Oak Ridge Boys’ official social media, which remembered Joe as “a 50-year member of the American music group The Oak Ridge Boys.

    "Joe was a member of the Grand Ole Opry and inducted into the Philadelphia Music Hall of Fame, the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, and the prestigious Country Music Hall of Fame," the statement added.

  25. Carol Bongiovi

    Jon Bon Jovi’s mom Carol Bongiovi died on July 9, 2024, at the age of 83.

    The ‘It’s My Life’ and ‘Livin’ on a Prayer’ singer paid tribute to his mom (a former model and member of the US Marine Corps) via People magazine, sharing on behalf of his family: “Our mother was a force to be reckoned with.

    “Her spirit and can-do attitude shaped this family. She will be greatly missed.”

  26. Shelley Duvall

    The Shining star Shelley Duvall passed away aged 75 on July 11, 2024.

    Known also for her roles in 1974’s Thieves Like Us, the musical Nashville, and Annie Hall, Shelley was a Cannes Film Festival Best Actress award winner and a BAFTA and Emmy award nominee.

    Shelley’s death was announced by her partner Dan Gilroy, who confirmed the news to The Hollywood Reporter.

    “My dear, sweet, wonderful life partner and friend left us. Too much suffering lately, now she’s free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley,” Dan said in a statement.

  27. Richard Simmons

    Fitness fanatic and TV star Richard Simmons died on July 13, 2024, aged 76.

    Known for fronting the weight-loss focused The Richard Simmons Show and his famous aerobics series Sweatin’ to the Oldies, Simmons’ death was confirmed by a representative.

    Following his rise to fame in the 70s and 80s, Simmons continued to be a familiar face on TV into the early 2010s, when he retired from public appearances.

  28. Abdul ‘Duke’ Fakir

    Last surviving Four Tops singer Abdul ‘Duke’ Fakir died on July 22, 2024.

    Aged 88, Abdul passed away at home as a result of heart failure, the ‘Reach Out I’ll Be There’ and ‘I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)’ singer’s family confirmed in a statement.

    “Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the loss of a trailblazer, icon, and music legend who, through his 70-year music career, touched the lives of so many as he continued to tour until the end of 2023, and officially retired this year,” the family's statement read.

    “As the last living founding member of the iconic The Four Tops music group, we find solace in Duke’s legacy living on through his music for generations to come.”

  29. John Anderson

    John Anderson, the iconic referee of the original Gladiators, died on July 28, 2024, aged 92.

    The Scottish television personality and former sports coach headed the series from 1992 to 2000, and became known nationwide for saying the famous Gladiators catchphrase: “Contender, ready! Gladiator, ready!”

    John’s coaching career saw him help the career of runner David Moorcroft, who broke the 5,000-metre record at the Oslo 1982 Olympics. He also coached Seoul Olympics 10,000-metre silver medalist Liz McColgan.

  30. Pete Wade

    Nashville guitar legend Herman Bland ‘Pete’ Wade passed away at the age of 89 on August 27, 2024.

    Pete was known for his work as a session musician on tracks including Ray Price’s ‘Crazy Arms’, Loretta Lynn’s ‘Fist City’, and George Jones’s ‘He Stopped Loving Her Today’.

    One of the Nashville A-Team, Pete’s death was announced by family in a statement which read that Pete had passed away “with his family by his side.”

  31. James Earl Jones

    Legendary actor James Earl Jones died aged 93 years old on September 9, 2024.

    The actor, best known for the deep baritone voice with which he portrayed characters including Star Wars’ Darth Vader and The Lion King’s Mufasa, was also the star of films including Field of Dreams and Coming to America.

    After discovering acting while working to overcome a stutter during childhood, the trailblazing actor went on to play numerous characters on the stage and screen, and earned himself the rare EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winner) title.

  32. Tito Jackson

    Jackson 5 star Tito Jackson passed away on September 15, 2024.

    An older brother to Michael, the 70-year-old was one of the Jackson 5 (later the Jacksons)’s founding members alongside his brothers Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon and Michael.

    Tito’s death was announced by his sons Taj, Taryll and TJ Jackson, who penned on social media: “We are shocked, saddened and heartbroken. Our father was an incredible man who cared about everyone and their wellbeing.

    "He will be missed tremendously. It will forever be 'Tito Time' for us. Please remember to do what our father always preached and that is 'Love One Another.' We love you Pops."

  33. Tommy Cash

    Johnny Cash’s younger brother Tommy Cash died on September 13, 2024.

    The 84-year-old was an accomplished country music singer in his own right, playing with Hank Williams Jr. before earning himself his own record deal in 1965.

    His biggest hit, 1969’s ‘Six White Horses’, was dedicated to John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.

    His death was announced via the Johnny Cash Museum’s social media on Saturday, September 14.

  34. Dame Maggie Smith

    British national treasure Dame Maggie Smith died aged 89 on September 27, 2024.

    The Oscar-winning actress whose career spanned over seven decades saw her play iconic roles such as Jean Brodie in 1969’s The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Minerva McGonagall in the Harry Potter films and Alan Bennett’s famous Lady in the Van in the 2010s play and later film The Lady in the Van.

    Announcing their mother’s death in a statement, Dame Maggie’s sons Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens shared that the multi-award winner “passed away peacefully in hospital...

    “An intensely private person, she was with friends and family at the end. She leaves two sons and five loving grandchildren who are devastated by the loss of their extraordinary mother and grandmother,” their statement continued.

  35. Kris Kristofferson

    Country music icon and actor Kris Kristofferson passed away on September 28, 2024.

    Famous for tracks like ‘For the Good Times’, ‘Help Me Make It Through the Night’ and ‘Me and Bobby McGee’, Kris also acted in movies including 1976’s A Star Is Born.

    “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news our husband/father/grandfather, Kris Kristofferson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 28 at home,” Kris’ family shared on September 28.

    “We’re all so blessed for our time with him. Thank you for loving him all these many years, and when you see a rainbow, know he’s smiling down at us all,” they added.

  36. Cissy Houston

    Whitney Houston’s mum Cissy Houston died on October 7, 2024, aged 91.

    The singer – known for her own legendary contribution to gospel and soul music in the 1960s and 70s with hits including  ‘I’ll Be There’ and ‘Think It Over’ – passed away at her home in New Jersey where she was under hospice care for Alzheimer’s disease.

    “Our hearts are filled with pain and sadness. We lost the matriarch of our family," said her daughter-in-law Pat Houston in a statement to People magazine.

    "A woman of deep faith and conviction, who cared greatly about family, ministry, and community... [Cissy’s] more than seven-decade career in music and entertainment will remain at the forefront of our hearts."

  37. Liam Payne

    Former One Direction star Liam Payne tragically passed away on October 16, 2024, aged just 31 years.

    Liam, best known for One Direction hits like ‘What Makes You Beautiful’ and ‘Best Song Ever’ as well as for his solo tracks ‘Strip That Down’ and ‘Teardrops’, died after falling from the balcony of a hotel room in which he was staying during a visit to Buenos Aries, Argentina.

    Actor Jonathan Haze died on November 2, 2024, aged 95.

    Best known for his role as florist assistant Seymour Krelboined in 1960’s The Little Shop of Horrors, Jonathan also starred in 1956’s It Conquered the World and 1959’s Forbidden Island.

    Jonathan’s death was confirmed by his daughter Rebecca Haze, who shared with Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter that her father died of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles.

    Quincy Jones, the legendary music producer who worked with stars including Michael Jackson and Frank Sinatra, died on November 3, 2024.

    Aged 91, the Thriller, Off the Wall and Bad album producer passed away surrounded by his family, his publicist’s statement read.

    "Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones' passing,” their message said.

    "And although this is an incredible loss for our family, we celebrate the great life that he lived and know there will never be another like him."

    Prince’s sister Tyka Nelson passed away on November 4, 2024.

    The R&B singer known for singles such as ‘Marc Anthony’s Tune’ died aged 64, her son President Nelson told the Minnesota Star Tribune.

    "Multi instrumentalist, songwriter, author, Tyka Nelson, Prince’s sister, died Monday, November 4, at North Memorial hospital in Robbinsdale," a statement read. "She is survived by her two sons Sir and President, and five grandchildren."

    Tyka retired from music in June of this year and was unwell, though details of her condition were not revealed.

  41. Timothy West

    Stage and screen icon Timothy West died on November 12, 2024, aged 90.

    Timothy was best known for his starring roles in films including 1973’s The Day of the Jackal and 1978’s The Thirty Nine Steps as well as for his parts in TV dramas including EastEnders and Last Tango in Halifax.

    Timothy is survived by family including his wife of 61 years, Fawlty Towers star Prunella Scales; their three children Juliet, Samuel and Joseph; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

    In a statement, his family shared: “After a long and extraordinary life on and off the stage, our darling father Timothy West died peacefully in his sleep yesterday evening... Tim was with friends and family at the end... All of us will miss him terribly.”

  42. Dennis Bryon

    Bee Gees drummer Dennis Bryon passed away on November 14, 2024.

    The 75-year-old Welsh rock drummer played in the ‘Staying Alive’ singers’ band from 1974 to 1980, appearing on the group’s famous Saturday Night Fever soundtrack in addition to several of their albums.

    Bryon also wrote, recorded and/or performed with other famous artists including Barbra Streisand, Jimi Hendrix and country star Kenny Rogers.

    Dennis’ death was announced by Blue Weaver, a former bandmate, who shared on Facebook: "I am lost for words at the moment… Dennis has passed away. Kayte, Dennis’s wife has just called me and asked if I would let all friends and fans know."

    Australian musician and actor Colin Petersen passed away on November 18, 2024, aged 78.

    Another former drummer of the Bee Gees, Colin’s death shocked fans of the band as it came just days after Dennis Bryon’s passing.

    Colin played with the Bee Gees from 1967 to 1969. His death was announced in a statement from his manager Greg Shaw who had recently worked with the 78-year-old on the Best Of The Bee Gees tribute shows.

    “[Colin’s] endearing nature and unabashed storytelling added unique perspectives to the shows and he was loved on and off stage. It was an honour to have called him my friend,” Greg’s statement read.

  44. Alfa Anderson

    Chic vocalist Alfa Anderson passed away on December 17, 2024, aged 78.

    Known for her work on Chic tracks including ‘Good Times’, ‘I Want Your Love’ and the Chic-produced Sister Sledge song ‘We Are Family’, in later life Alfa went on to work as a teacher.

    Alfa was remembered by her former Chic bandmate Nile Rodgers in an Instagram tribute video, which the singer-songwriter captioned: “#restinpoweralfaanderson... Thank you for everything.”

    Music producer Richard Perry died on December 24, 2024, after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease.

    The 82-year-old worked with artists including Rod Stewart, Barbra Streisand and Ringo Starr on legendary works such as Rod’s The Great American Songbook album series.

    Paying tribute to Richard via social media, Rod penned: “Dearest Richard, farewell, my dear buddy. They say in life a man is lucky if he can count his true friends on one hand, and you were certainly one of them. Now I’ve lost you, and I’m devastated.

    “We played and worked so closely together for so many years, creating some of the most memorable music together. You were there when Penny and I first started dating, encouraging our relationship. We are both in tears as I post this farewell.”
